Dr. Joseph Opala is the guest speaker at the MCIFB’S August 6, 2011, community meeting in Wewoka OK. Location and time will be announced soon!Attend the meeting and find out how the Creek and Seminole Indian Freedmen connect to the Gullah people and Sierra LeoneOpala is an American historian who documented the "Gullah Connection," the historical link between the Gullah people in South Carolina and Georgia, and the West African nation of Sierra Leone. The Gullah are a distinctive group of Black Americans from South Carolina and Georgia in the southeastern United States. They live in small farming and fishing communities along the Atlantic coastal plain and on the chain of Sea Islands which runs parallel to the coast. Because of their geographical isolation and strong community life, the Gullah have been able to preserve more of their African cultural heritage than any other group of Black Americans. They speak a creole language similar to Sierra Leone Krio, use African names, tell African folktales, make African-style handicrafts such as baskets and carved walking sticks, and enjoy a rich cuisine based primarily on rice. Opala has also done extensive research on the Bunce Island slave castle in Sierra Leone. Opala's research resulted in three historic African-American homecomings to Sierra Leone: the Gullah Homecoming (1989), the Moran Family Homecoming (1997), and Priscilla’s Homecoming (2005). Opala helped produce documentary films that cover these events and the many historical, cultural and language connections between Sierra Leone and the Gullahs. Opala currently resides in the West African nation of Sierra Leone. |
